Finney Quarter Horse Ranch, Mares & Colts

Welcome to the Finney Ranch! The colts we are offering were all born here on the ranch and have run out in big pastures with their mothers as close to nature's way as we can make it.

VERSATILITY: 1. a) competent in many things, b) adaptable to many uses or functions. If we were to sum up Finney Quarter Horses' mission statement in one word, versatility would be it.

We both grew up and worked along side our fathers on large cattle ranches. Joe's family raised a few ranch horses to ride and sell. The main function of our horses was to get the work done in a timely manner. "Broke Horses" in those days were ones you caught, saddled, bridled, jumped on, and loped out to get the heifer in that was having calving difficulty at 2:00 am.  Practicality dictated a horse that you didn't have to lunge or lope for 30 minutes before you did your work. The favorite colored horse in those days was the one you could do all the above on, confident you weren't going to land in a snow bank head first.

Those were the days before 4-wheelers and antibiotic dart guns. So, our horses had to be fast enough to catch the critter being chased, athletic enough to keep his footing up and down sandhills, through blowouts, over gopher mounds, and around soap weeds. They also had to be cowy enough to follow the target through the obstacle course, and steady enough to let you rope the calf when you hit the flat. Then, unless you were lucky enough to have a helper, you needed a horse smart enough to hold the rope tight, stay put while you worked on the patient, and not take flight the minute you stepped out of the stirrup. It was a pretty tall order to fill, but we were both lucky enough to ride and appreciate that kind of horse.

A whole new dimension was added when we each caught the 4-H horse show and rodeo bug. But, just as they were for ranch work, our 4-H and rodeo horses were picked out of our corrals, not the "Horses for Sale " ads. However, those cowy, fast athletes proved themselves to be not only excellent ranch horses but outstanding competition horses as well. Most of them came from the old bloodlines in the days when a horse could win a match race, a roping, and a halter class all on the same day - versatility at its finest!

The rush felt when your horse beats the cow before she gets back in the herd, your calf horse drops into a deep stop, or when your barrel horse makes a smokin' run is more elating than any drug. When it can be done on the same horse, you have reached the pinnacle. That is what we strive for here at Finney Quarter Horses.
